It’s spring break over here, and I’ve been running around being just mommy for the past few days. We’ve been running errands, having movie time, meeting friends for play time and lots of coloring here at home. I’ve been so busy with the mommy stuff this week I haven’t had time until today to get down in the studio. But, right now all is quiet. It’s drizzly, cold and damp. The boys are watching a movie and I have the whole afternoon stretched out ahead of me to work, with the occasional break for my babies when they need me. I’m in heaven! Well, that and the fact that it’s almost the weekend and we finally get date night this weekend!

Happy week end and happy weekend everyone! Go create something amazing.

Last week, I finished up another Easter decoration for my house. I love having banners on the mantle, so I decided to make one that wasn’t all bunnies and eggs.

I’ve included the printable for you here:  easter banner All you need to do is cut out the flags and glue or sew onto ribbon. I used burlap ribbon to stay with the decor I already have. It’s the perfect little craft for Holy Week. Have fun making one!

This morning I started with a frenzy, deep cleaning the master bathroom and bedroom. I finally got a printable project finished and ready to go, and a few other housekeeping items done before it was time to pick up my big boy and head to quilt.

I had a lovely afternoon finishing a beautiful sampler style quilt made by a friend. I used her quilt as a guinea pig, trying out some new patterns. I think it turned out lovely.

I mixed and matched some all over patterns, and practiced my feathers in the center triangles.

I think it turned out lovely, and I had a lot of fun doing it!

Last week I finally stopped long enough to finish my bunny table runner for the dining room table. I go the idea from a Pin on Pinterest. You can find the whole post, as well as a link to the bunny silhouette  over on Eclectically Vintage. Check her site out, she has TONS of adorable things on there, as well as a lot of neat projects!

I think it looks cute on my table, especially with the basket of bunnies and eggs!

The first two weeks of InDesign 101 I did flashcards and a food planner, check them out! The third week of class we learned how to type set a book. This was truly the largest chunk of work we had to finish, and we learned a whole lot while doing it. I chose to do Jane Austen’s Persuasion.

This was tedious at times, and took a while, even though Persuasion isn’t that long. I had a lot of fun styling it though, especially since the copy I own isn’t that pretty!

I can’t wait to have one of these printed! It’s so exciting, and even though it took a long time, it really was a fun project.

All in all, I’m so happy that I decided to take InDesign 101 from Nicole’s Classes. It was definitely worth it, I’ve already been commissioned to make a photo book for a project for my Grandmother, something I would have had to use online templates for before I took this class. I am also looking to take more, because the format of the class was great for my schedule and crazy days of little guys, and not too overwhelming either. It was definitely opened doors for me that would have otherwise been hard to open. So if you are in need of a little learning, hop over to Nicole’s Classes and sign up for a class!

In the first week of InDesign 101 we made flashcards. You can check them out here! The second week of class in InDesign 101 we made a food planner. I know, you’re asking me right now what a food planner is right? It’s a planner (calendar) that has recipes tucked in with it!

I was really excited about this project, because I LOVE planners and calendars. I love the search for a new one, the new features, the expanse of blank pages. I just never seem to find one that is just…right. But now, with my newfound knowledge, I can make my own! And the purpose of putting the recipes in their as well was to teach us how to format for them, in case we ever wanted to make a cookbook (Something else that’s on my long term list of goals).

We got to use some lovely pictures taken by Nicole of Nicole’s classes. They are so lovely, I wish all of my photos looked as good! (She teaches photography classes! )

This is the cover of my food planner:

I started each month with an “at a glance” calendar page, and we incorporated quotes about food as well.

And, since I always need weekly pages with lots of space for to – do lists, phone numbers and things to remember, I added those in-between each month.

planner2I’m sketching things out and thinking of what I’d like in my own planner for next year, and I think I’ll try my hand at my own wall calendar for the fridge as well! This week’s project was definitely fun, but I love the next week’s too. I can’t wait to show that one to you.

I’ve been taking the InDesign 101 class through Nicole’s Classes this past month. Their classes are typically 4 weeks, and are project based. You watch videos and make projects based on the skills you need to use a program to it’s fullest. There are a variety of classes, and there are several more I want to take! I chose InDesign because I knew it would help me to create better layouts for quilt patterns in the future. Alma Loveland, the teacher explains everything very clearly and gives you real world examples too, as she is a graphic designer in “real” life. I’m going to sign up for Illustrator 101 and Making a Pattern as well, because while I have a working knowledge of Illustrator, there is so much more I’d like to know.

I am SO GLAD I took this class! Within the first week I had already learned some valuable information, and made adorable flash cards. We learned how to set up master pages, and how to change them.

The first set was a number set, from 0 to 9. My oldest boy wanted stars on them, “like in outer space.”

flashcards

The next set was all about animals. The pictures of the animals we used were original watercolors done by the teacher’s husband! They are lovely. I think this is my favorite set.

flashcards2

The next set was colors. Again, we had custom made watercolor blobs to play with. I love these too! I want to print them out and frame them in my studio.

flashcards3The last set was all about shapes. It was fun to learn how to draw all the different ones in InDesign, it’s a lot different than Photoshop sometimes.

flashcards4

There were 50 cards in all, and that was only our first week’s project! I’m going to have these printed for my little guys to use, and I really think they’d make lovely baby gifts.

What do you think? I really encourage you to check out Nicole’s Classes, it’s been an awesome experience and I can’t wait to share my next project with you!

I don’t know what it is about spring, but it simultaneously makes me feel like cleaning the entire house, top to bottom, inside and out, and getting my hands dirty in the yard. I want to plant flowers, re-arrange shrubbery and generally make a mess. But, as it’s still getting pretty frosty in the mornings, my planting urges will have to wait. As will the outside of the house cleaning, because I live in Georgia and well…POLLEN!

I realized earlier this week that I often start spring cleaning only to get side tracked, because I bite off more than I can chew. This year, I’m breaking everything down into rooms, and into tasks. I’ll do a task on the list each day as I can, maybe more than one as I see that I can. And I’m starting in the kitchen, when I usually start in the master bathroom. And the very first thing I’m doing? Cleaning out my cleaning supplies!

I took to Pinterest to get some good tips and ideas, and came across this post from Martha about cleaning supplies. I keep the ones I use the most in a bucket under my sink, and the rest kind of willy-nilly behind the bucket. The things I use the most are my home-made windex (vinegar, rubbing alcohol and water, this gets week old dog drool off a window in one swipe and never streaks a mirror!), Pinesol, liquid gold wood polish, Murphy’s Oil, gloves, a scrub brush, an old toothbrush and an assortment of cleaning cloths. That way I can carry the bucket to whichever room I’m in and everything I need is there! This is especially important since I can rarely clean one room in one sitting, I always have to stop to get juice, change a diaper or break up a fight! If you want to go all natural in your cleaning supplies, Blissfully Domestic has an awesome post with 10 tips for spring cleaning with all natural ingredients.

Jamie at The Flying Tire also posted this awesome inspiration for all of the “stuff” we all accumulate:

I’m also going to be cleaning out and organizing as I go, so I pinned several different strategies on my Getting Organized board. Come check it out! I’ve got checklists, toy cleaning strategies, the works!

What are your spring cleaning strategies?

It’s been so cold and windy here the past few days, I’ve been spending a lot of time in the kitchen experimenting and playing. It’s been a lot of fun, I cooked up an awesome dinner for my sweet husband last night, and so far I’ve made 2 different kinds of crackers. I’m probably going to make more graham crackers today, I haven’t made some in a while and they’re always a big hit!

making crackers

I got the book Jam It, Pickle It, Cure It by Karen Solomon (you can find it here on Amazon!) for my birthday last year, and I love making things in it! The marshmallow recipe is far better than Martha’s, and the mayonnaise is awesome. I’m going to try the strawberry jam recipe when I get in the strawberries I’ve order from my big boy’s school. The crackers are yet another awesome recipe in the book. I’ve made 2 kinds so far, a simple black pepper cracker (that’s what’s in the large jar) and some cheesy ones as well.

These are the cheesy crackers I made, I made them all fancy and round! Next time, more cheese and cayenne pepper to make them taste a little more like those fabulous cheese straws!

I’ve been making several things to prepare the house for spring and Easter lately. You’ve seen my eggs, but the other day I made some sleepy bunny bags to join them in their basket on my dining room table.

bunnies and eggs basket

They were super quick and easy! I found the idea on Pinterest and got the pattern from mermag. You can get one for yourself here! She suggests felt, but I went with canvas, as I didn’t have any felt and the canvas goes with my decor a little better. I’m working on a cute table runner and banner for the mantle now, and tossing around ideas for the front door. My husband said if I made a giant hot pink Peep for the front door he’d move out, so I guess I better come up with something else!
